I’d like to be able to include a photo, and I might have been able to get a decent one, but I did not have my camera this morning when I saw a great blue heron in Hughes Lake. I have not seen a great blue heron in the lake in several years. Great egrets have visited frequently but not great blue herons.
It reminded me of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which Jody and I saw on Sunday. The setting of the play is a farm house that has a pond on the property. The occupants of the farm house, Vanya and Sonia, expect and hope that a blue heron will visit the pond. They see it as a good omen.
I don’t view a heron sighting as an omen but I am encouraged that such a majestic bird will occasionally visit the humble two-acre pond in our neighborhood.
