Campfire

In observance of National Poetry Month

Campfire

They are in their fifties now.
Those teens uncomfortable
On rough wooden seats.

I had been the speaker
At a small Baptist camp
Up in the hills.

The staff asked me
If I would also speak
At the closing campfire.

Sure. Why not?
Ten, fifteen minutes
To wrap up the week.

Forty-five minutes in
I heard a girl say
“Just shut up.”

Some hear the voice of God.
I hear the girl’s voice.
“Just shut up.”
